Legal Due Diligence in Private Security Operations
The spirit of #BlueSecurity demonstrates the respect for an Individual’s rights in a complex environment of international legal regimes. The constant instability caused by piracy and threats of violence on shipping routes prudent security management and a solid legal awareness to be able to react to changing security situations. The complex interplay of different legal […]Societal Awareness in River Operations – need to have?
Concerns associated to inland waterways are commonly of navigational or environmental nature. Cruise operators, freight forwarders and insurance companies, however should include a further layer of operational consideration and broader strategic observation in their river activities: the focus should extend the risk assessment to societal security environments, capabilities and resilience on and around the waterway.
This forward-thinking approach was tested in a large-scale logistic operation on Danube river, that is captured on YouTube. Thyssen Krupp Industrial Solutions manufactured a chemical plant that was shipped by DB Schenker. Téthys Naval developed the operational maritime security framework aligned to the principles of the Three-Elements-Doctrine and the BlueSecurity initiative.
DO YOU CONSIDER THE UNKNOWN?
Rivers have long served as crucial arteries for commerce, tourism, and transportation. They face escalating security risks ranging from piracy or sabotage in transit or accidents caused by aging infrastructure. Vandalism and theft during unmanned waiting periods add risk as behaviour-based exposure during excursions and port visits.
Recognizing these challenges and extending risk assessment to societal environments, a river operator and insurance company is well advised to gain comprehensive societal awareness. Such a profiling encompasses both riverine operations and security environment. The concept of Crime-Prevention-through-Environmental-Design (CPTED) partly recognises this. It delivers an understanding of societal patterns and public means and methods for support that can be expected during the planning of a venture. Crisis response awareness is relevant not only for the immediate response management, but also for the short to medium term.
For Téthys Naval, it was evident to foster a constant exchange with national security agencies, local police units and municipalities, with diplomatic missions, media and international organisations. For the Danube project, Téthys Naval established a lasting relation with the Danube Commission in Budapest.
IMPLICATIONS FOR RIVER CRUISES AND FREIGHT FORWARDING
At its core, BlueSecurity integrates advanced technologies such as AI-driven analytics, real-time monitoring, and predictive modelling to extend the risk assessment to societal security environments. A sophisticated protection concept mitigates risk exposure, enhances planning and ensure due performance. For river cruise operators, this means greater safety for passengers and staff and enhanced security in congested routes.
The prevention of security breaches in unmanned waiting positions mitigates reputational harm and contractual penalties for malperformance. Because each act of vandalism and every damage of specialty cargo could impair the punctutal delivery and installation at site. Ultimately, it can delay the due completion of the plant as per contract. This would trigger often severe penalty payments.
INSURANCE AWARENESS: A CRITICAL COMPONENT
An equally important aspect of the BlueSecurity Initiative is its relevance to the insurance industry. The Danube project highlighted that by incorporating detailed risk assessments and historical data into security framework development, insurers can offer more tailored and competitive coverage for river-based operations – and pair their coverage with more compatible premium calculation due to outperforming prudence in risk management.
This collaboration not only reduced financial risks of contractual penalties for the manufacturer due to delayed inauguration of the chemical plant or DB Schenker as freight forwarding partner. It also encourages the adoption of cutting-edge security measures, creating a culture of accountability and innovation across the supply chain.
A VISION FOR THE FUTURE
As rivers continue to underpin global trade and cultural exchange, the implementation of advanced security frameworks like BlueSecurity ensures that these waterways remain safe, efficient, and sustainable for generations to come. For stakeholders in the river cruise and freight forwarding industries, adopting such solutions is more than a strategic advantage – it is a commitment to resilience, growth, and the preservation of one of the world’s most critical resources.
